Community-Based Vocational Education
The CBVE Program offers students transitioning from Palm Avenue the opportunity to cultivate essential work habits and job skills. Students also learn how to create a resume, fill out job applications, and much more.
Participants volunteer at various locations, including Goodwill stores on Blanding and Dunn Avenues, Publix on Roosevelt, Zaxby’s on Roosevelt, and Rose’s Express on Normandy Boulevard.
We are pleased to share that one of our students has successfully maintained employment with Chartwells for three years and has also been working at Bitty & Beau’s for over two years. We extend our gratitude to the parents for their enthusiastic response to our CBVE wish list and for their continued support.

Travel Training
Palm Avenue's job coach and job developers have been instrumental in providing transition students with valuable post-school experiences through travel training. This training serves as a tool to assist students in accessing transportation through JTA and provides an opportunity to learn safety rules when traveling to their destinations on foot. Students are exposed to all modes of transportation offered by JTA, which includes the city bus, Ready-Ride, the Skyway, ferry, and Connection Plus.
In addition, travel training allows students to explore various community agencies like the Jacksonville Regional Transportation Commission (JRTC), Supervisor of Elections, Center for Independent Living (CIL), Sam's Club, Walmart, James Weldon Johnson Park, and Sweet Pete's, among others. Thanks to travel training, some of our students have received their Star Cards from JTA, enabling them to ride the bus at a discounted price. Similarly, some students have completed voter registration paperwork, and one has even obtained their voter's registration card.
Overall, travel training is an excellent strategy to provide meaningful experiences for our students as they acquire the necessary skills for post-school living.
