So, you want to become an Athletic Coach?  Duval County Public Schools is looking for talented, dedicated individuals with special skills to coach sports. 

Florida law requires all Athletic Coaches to hold either a valid Florida Educator Certificate or a valid Athletic Coaching Certificate.  The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) issues two types of Athletic Coaching Certificates, a non-renewable Three-Year Athletic Coaching Certificate and a Five-Year Athletic Coaching Certificate. The Three-Year Athletic Coaching Certificate is issued to provide time to complete the requirements for the Five-Year Athletic Coaching Certificate. For individuals who hold a valid Florida Educator’s Certificate, an additional Athletic Coaching Certificate is not required.  

Below are the steps to becoming an Athletic Coach for Duval County Public Schools:

  1. Applicant must submit an application for employment as a Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) Athletic Coach at the following link: SchoolSpring

     

  2. An interview is conducted with the applicant by the Athletic Director and/or Principal

     

  3. Athletic Director notifies School Administration regarding the potential hire of the applicant

     

  4. Applicant is offered a position as a DCPS Athletic Coach

     

  5. School Administration submits a Recommend to Hire through the applicant platform

     

  6. Human Resources processes the Recommend to Hire

    • A welcome email is sent to the applicant which contains instructions and the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). The AUP must be signed to receive access to additional information and tasks required of the applicant.

    • After the AUP is signed by the applicant, the applicant must proceed through and complete the assigned tasks PowerSchool

       

  7. If applicant holds a valid Florida Educator Certificate, an additional Athletic Coaching Certificate is not required. Please note: A district issued Career and Technical Education Certificate (CTE) is not a Florida Educator Certificate.  If applicant does not hold a valid Florida Educator Certificate, the applicant must submit an application online with the FLDOE at Florida Department of Education with a credit card payment of $75.  Applicant must submit the application summary and proof of payment to FLDOE to DCPS Human Resources (HR).  There are no VOLUNTEER coaches permitted in/on any athletic facility of DCPS or permitted with students/athletes of DCPS.

     

  8. Applicant must complete Ethics Training via TEAMS.  Once applicant completes all new hire paperwork and fingerprint clearance is received by DCPS Human Resources (HR), the applicant will be contacted by DCPS HR to schedule Ethics Training via TEAMS.

     

  9. Applicant must have a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course completion card or certificate issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross (ARC) or an equivalent CPR course completion card or certificate issued by an entity approved by the Florida Department of Health (FDOH)

     

  10. Once applicant completes Ethics Training via TEAMS, they will receive a certificate of completion and an approved DCPS Athletic Coaching Statement of Understanding, via email. This email will be copied to the applicant, the Athletic Director and the DCPS Athletic Office.  Once the DCPS Athletic Office receives the Ethics Training certificate of completion and an approved DCPS Athletic Coaching Statement of Understanding, the applicant will be contacted to schedule the appropriate exam(s) through the DCPS Athletic Office. Applicant must provide approved DCPS Athletic Coaching Statement of Understanding and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course completion card or certificate issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross (ARC) or an equivalent CPR course completion card or certificate issued by an entity approved by the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) when scheduling the appropriate exam(s) through DCPS Athletic Office.

     

  11. Applicant must schedule appropriate exam(s) through DCPS Athletic Office. To schedule the exam(s), applicant must respond to the email received from the DCPS Athletic Office.  The email from the DCPS Athletic Office, Email Kathy Barton, will contain registration information for the appropriate exam(s).  Applicant should refer to DCPS Athletic Coaching Testing and NFHS Courses for additional information.  Applicant must pass the exam regarding the rules of the specific sport and the exam which covers Middle School Conference Constitution or Florida High School Athletic Association Policies and Bylaws with a grade of 70% or higher.

     

  12. DCPS Athletic Office will contact the Athletic Director of the school in which the applicant is being hired to notify the applicant is available to begin employment. An individual is NOT permitted to coach until the email is received from the DCPS Athletic Office.  There are no VOLUNTEER coaches permitted in/on any athletic facility of DCPS or permitted with students/athletes of DCPS.  Payment for employment will not begin until a valid Athletic Coaching Certificate is issued to the employee.

Additional Information After Hire:

  • Employee must complete two courses Concussion in Sports and Sudden Cardiac Arrest through National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) at the following link: NFHS Learn. Upon completion of these courses, employee must provide the completion certificates to the Athletic Director assigned to the school in which he/she is employed.  Employee should refer to DCPS Athletic Coaching Testing and NFHS Courses for additional information.

     

  • Employee must begin working on the requirements to obtain the Five-Year Athletic Coaching Certificate. Employee should refer to DCPS Athletic Coaching Statement of Understanding for additional information.

     

  • If employment with Duval County Public Schools is terminated for any reason, employment as an Athletic Coach will also be terminated.  To continue employment as an Athletic Coach, the employee must contact the DCPS Employee Support Office at 904.390.2400 and complete the requirements to be considered for continued employment as an Athletic Coach.
