Financial Aid is any resource that can assist in off-setting the cost of college. The process may be unique to some schools but typically students/families will need to apply for financial aid at three levels: Federal, State and Institutional. Note: No one should assume they will not qualify for financial aid! Scholarships and university programs consider a wide range of factors when awarding money for education.
Find a college's net price calculator to help figure out how much the 'bottom line' price would be for that college
Federal Student Aid is money that students can use to help pay for college. It covers such expenses as books and supplies, tuition and fees, room and board, and transportation. There are three main types of aid: grants, work-study and loans.
Who gets it? Everyone should apply for federal student aid regardless of income.
How to apply? Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at FAFSA Website
When to apply? FAFSA usually becomes available on January 1. Students should apply as soon as possible senior year.
State Financial Aid is money that students can use to help pay for college. It covers such expenses as books and supplies, tuition and fees, room and board, and transportation. There are many grants and scholarships available but Bright Futures and First Generation Grant are the most common.
Who gets it? Everyone should apply for Florida financial aid regardless of income, grade point average or test scores.
How to apply? Complete the Florida Financial Aid Application at website
When to apply? The Florida financial aid application usually becomes available in December. Students should apply as soon as possible senior year. Helpful hints guide to completing this application can be found here.
Institutional (college/university) Financial Aid is money that students may receive from the institution they attend to help pay for college. It covers such expenses as books and supplies, tuition and fees, room and board, and transportation. Often times the college or university will require a separate application for aid.
Who gets it? Students should talk to the colleges financial aid office to determine what the qualifications are for their financial aid.
How to apply? Colleges usually have a separate application process for financial aid. Check the schools website to determine how you should apply for financial aid.
When to apply? Financial aid deadlines vary from school to school but keep checking the schools website, and apply as soon as possible.
Scholarship is financial support awarded to a student, based on academic achievement or other criteria that may include financial need, for the purpose of schooling. There are various types of scholarships – the two most common being merit-based and need-based. The donor or department funding the scholarship sets the criteria for recipient selection, and the grantor specifically defines how the money is to be applied. The funds are used to defray the costs of tuition, books, room, board and other expenses directly tied to a student’s educational cost through the university.
Scholarships are typically awarded using a variety of factors, including - but not limited to, academic achievement, departmental and community involvement, employment experience, areas of study, and financial need.
