Visual Arts Audition Requirements

Follow the instructions on SlideRoom; all requested materials must be completed before the audition deadline. What artwork do I upload on SlideRoom before the audition?

For rising 9th and 10th graders

A portfolio containing 4 pieces of artwork. Anime, cartoons, AI-generated images, or copyrighted material will not be accepted.

Use the instructions below.  All work must be done by the student within the last calendar year.

1)  Self-Portrait with Hat

One original self-portrait with hat using a mirror for direct observation – not from a photo; include your head, neck, shoulders, and a background; completed on your own time (non-class assignment); completed within the last month. Can be a drawing or painting.

No digital art, please. Shading is optional.

2)  Hand Drawing

One original drawing or painting of your own hand with a background from direct observation - not from a photo; completed on your own time (non-class assignment); completed within the last month.

3)  Plant Artwork

One original artwork using plants as a subject completed within the past year, whether from an art class or done on your own time.

Any medium, such as sculpture, painting, photography, digital photography, drawing, collage, printmaking, etc., is accepted.

Using any plant(s) for inspiration, create a strong composition that fills the page/space with good visual movement.

4)  Your FAVORITE: Your favorite artwork completed within the past year, whether from an art class or done on your own time. Any style or medium, such as painting, sculpture, design, photography, digital photography, collage, printmaking, drawing, etc., is accepted. No Anime, cartoons, AI-generated images, or copyrighted material.

For rising 11th and 12th graders

In addition to the above 4 portfolio pieces, applicants must submit three (3) additional portfolio pieces for a total of 7 pieces of artwork. Anime, cartoons, AI-generated images, or copyrighted material will not be accepted.

The three (3) related artworks should be:

  • Completed within the past year in any medium. No copyrighted images, AI-generated images, or plagiarized artwork.

  • Original art showing your range of skills and your point of view/ideas.

What will happen at the Audition.

1) You will be asked to do a pencil drawing on an 18" x 24" paper from a still life in the audition classroom.

2) You will be asked to write a one-page critique with three (3) paragraphs. A reproduction of a masterwork will be presented in the audition classroom for you to critique.
