Creative Writing Audition Requirements
Creative writing applicants should bring a portfolio of three to five examples of the student’s best writing. The pieces should have undergone careful revision either by the student on his or her own by the instructor. They should represent the student’s strongest work in at least two genres (e.g., fiction, poetry, essay). The audition will include on-demand writing as well as a written reaction to a published work. Please come prepared to write by bringing a pen and paper. In addition to writing, please come prepared to participate in a short interview (approximately 10 minutes) that will focus on your writing inspiration, practice, and academic history.
Adjudicators will be looking for a thoughtful, honest expression of ideas that reveal expertise in language and insight into literature. Portfolios should be typed. The quality of creative writing is most important. Please do not include academic work, drawings, or visual images in or on the portfolio. All pieces should be uploaded into SlideRoom to be considered. Only submit the applicant’s original student writing. AI generated writing submissions will NOT be accepted.
